We are looking for a Rope Tow for a small Club run hill. Budget of about 1000-1500, located in the Canadian Prairies. Any suggestions on plans/parts or rope tows for purchase would be appreciated.

Can anyone answer this question for me? What size of electrical engine would be suitable to run a 400ft long rope tow with an elevation of about 50 feet?

Please help us out. Obviously we are green to this and this seems like the only useful resource on the internet!

I would think that 8-10 HP would be enough. Try browsing Ebay for motors and gear reducers.

At Panorama (BC), we just replace an old rope-tow with a nice new Magic Carpet. It's 7.5HP, about 400' long. 208V 3ph. Got all the stuff. I'll ask the boss if he want to sell it.

It's got a real ornery old wye-delta starter. Rip the little kid's arms right out of their sockets! (they will not let go!!!). Reccomend a new VFD starter if it ever makes it out of the bone-yard.

Probably need to update your budget, it was just over $1,000 for the rope alone on our rope tow that is about the same length, you'll have to budget for engineering and other assorted stuff (signs, safety gates etc.) to meet Z98 code. And a newer one from say Borer (http://www.borer-lif...e/skilifte.html) will run you about $50,000 not including installation. Our drive motor on the new Borer one that we picked up a couple of years ago is, I believe, 7.5HP.

Thanks Guys I appreciated the replies. I know we are working on a low budget, but this isn't a commercial operation, it's a small non profit snowboard club (50members) on private land. We've priced out making our own rope tow, and I think we can do it for under 2000, but if there's one rotting in a bone yard somewhere for a few thousand...small rope tows seem to be getting replaced by carpets everywhere.

What would the gear reduction ratio be for a motor of that size? And how many rpms would do the trick? My tow needs to be for a 350' run at about a 20` slope. Thanks, Steve
