Just read in SAM that a used double or triple will be going in at the new Eclipse Snow Park in Colorado. It is where the old St. Mary's Glacier Ski Area was.

In regards to the demo of Sterling lift...We have the rope off towers 2, 3, 4, and 5...we're rigged to pull tension, pull the pin outta the sprocket and drop the counterweight..then we'll start taking the bottom terminal apart  ........cutting things with a torch is fun

Correction in list of new lifts:
Belleyre is spelled Belleayre - www.belleayre.com

Windham Mountain is getting 2 new lifts. One is a HSQ.

This topic has been mentioning the Steamboat Sunshine Express project as a done deal yet I've seen nothing official about it happening this summer - nothing on the Steamboat web site (if anything, the master plan document there has the lower mountain six-pack as happening first) or anyplace else I could find (including elsewhere here). So just how sure are some of you about it happening this summer?

I'd love to see it happen. It would certainly make a big difference as to how much I ski that part of the mountain. So I'm hoping it is true - I'd just like to find some confirmation.

It was just an assumption that I made that Steamboat might be getting it since it made perfect sense. However, I haven't seen one news article about Steamboat getting a new lift over the summer either so maybe the lift is going into storage for a year or being relocated to another ASC resort, but unlikely.

The six pack will replace the Christie lifts.

I contacted The Canyons today to see what ASC is going to do with the Tombstone Express.

and Southface and/or Headwall. It will have a mid-station and turn as I understand it. Along with it is upgrading Thunderhead Express from 2,400 pph to 2,800 (more carriers, not faster rope speed). They really want a higher capacity way up the mountain for days when the Gondola is down for whatever reason. Right now, Southface / Christie III / Thunderhead Express is a very slow way up the mountain.

Hopefully they will prioritize the Sunshine upgrade first, Christie lifts are not that bad since Christie II is also there if needed for back up. People just don't like fixed-grip chairs much anymore. Eventually a HS upgrade would be nice to see at least for the Christie chair(s). I think the beginner lifts (Southface, Headwall, Preveiw,10 different carpets, etc should remain as is however.

Any recent word on any demolition work? Could they be storing the HSS to install in '07 or just pacing themselves?

I just got this from The Canyons:

Quote

Hello Cameron,
I have been informed that the lift is going to Steamboat. Let me know
anytime if you need further information.

I'll now contact Steamboat and find out when it plans to install the lift. If it does happen this summer, one reason why this hasn't been made public yet is maybe because Steamboat doesn't want to have environmentalists put their foot in the door and make Steamboat wait for an environmental assessment report.

What would be nice would be to have the 6pack go to the "Christie Hill" have a midway and a turn and then go to the top of the gondola.

I agree with this since the Christie lifts are short and sunshine is a fun area to ski but the lift ride can be terrible.

I think Smuggler's Notch, Vermont is getting a Leitner-Poma six pack this year. 52 lifts and counting!

That's gonna be their first detachable, right? Pretty big capacity jump. Any idea which lift it is?

It will replace the Sterling double, but will only have 2200 initial capacity, not 3600 like some 6packs.

why Sterling? It seems more worthwile to replace Madonna since it serves more terrain and more vertical.

They just redid Madonna 1 with a new drive terminal and stuff. I think they want to keep Madonna the way it is

I contacted the VP at Smuggler's Notch about the Six-Pack and he told me that the six-pack is just a rumor. Here's the email that he sent back to me:

Quote

Jon-

Smugglers' management frequently discusses lift options for both Sterling &
Morse mountains. What I think you are referring to is our current
consideration of a six passenger detachable on either mountain, as opposed
to quad. At this point it is nothing more than calculating relative costs
and marketing impact. Nothing more, yet. Do you have an opinion?

Keith R. Glover, VP
Smugglers' Notch Resort

I haven't emailed him back yet, but I'm basically going to tell him that I think that a six pack would be a little bit overkill for such an area. Yes, it would be a good thing for marketing, as Stowe next door doesn't have any six-packs, but that I think that a six passenger lift would ruin the feel of the ski area.
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.
