I do remember when Copper's lifts got full names (I believe the same year Super Bee and Excellerator were installed) and we all made guesses as to what the lifts would be called. I think Highpoint was the only one we got right. I still mostly refer to the lifts by their letters such as A, R, and S, but some of the others such as Resolution or Flyer I had no idea of their letters until a few years ago.

Blackcomb was a logging theme

Pa was a timber faller (still is, when there's no snow to plow at Crystal) and always thought it was neat the Blackcomb's entire setup was named after his industry. The Cruiser chair meant different things to different people, of course.

Where's that? It sounds like something up in Canada.

I have to say that chairlifts where the name reflects the lift's location are decent - Skyline Express at Vail runs partially on a ridge, Excelerator at Copper is very fast and short, Wayback at Keystone returns you from the Outback, etc.

I think the high speed quads were the first to actually receive names, based on historical map analysis.

Hmmm... so nobody called it the Hemock chair until '92?

While GadZoom is clever, most of us just call it Zoom.

My favorite is the FaceLift at Whiteface, NY. It is located at "The Face", it serves the main face of the mountain, it is a play on words since a face lift is another term for plastic surgery, and it was a major face lift (upgrade) for the mountain.

Titanic might be fun. The element of suspense should not be overlooked.

What would you name the runs off this Titanic lift if you built a lift with that name?

On a related note, I think Zendo and the Kensho SuperChair take my mark for best chairlift names around.

My favorites are Stairway to Heaven (Fixed quad, Kicking Horse, BC), Arrow Bahn Express (High speed quad, Beaver Creek) and Ninety Nine 90 Express (High Speed Quad, Canyons). One of the semi-finalist names for A-Basin's high speed quad was Chairway to Heaven, that would have been pretty funny but it was Black Mountain Express instead, that's a pretty good name too.

9990 is pretty unoriginal though. Guess how high the peak is?

Extreme Access! lift. One year only, until people realised it was silly and switched it to Mountain Chief.

This is kind of :off-topic:, but do you guys ever see the ski industry doing what sport stadiums have done in the recent past. They have changed the name of the stadiums and coliseums to reflect the names of companies. Like Minute Maid Stadium, Tropicana Stadium, SBC Stadium, SafeCo Stadium etc. Maybe in the future, we will have ski runs and lifts named after companies like Cingular Wireless' Run, Verizon Express, Aflac Lodge.

Even Wachusett has the Polar Express (Polar Seltzer) but yes, I have seen an increase of product placement in the names of lifts these days...

Vail has a few runs in the Back Bowls named after Celestial Seasonings tea, with an ® on the signs. Isn't there an "American Express" at Stratton too?

When I first learned how to ski in the late 70s at Keystone, The Packsaddle 1 lift was there and it was called "Go Devil" , A-51 was called "Packsaddle" Around 1980ish, "Go Devil" lift was renamed "Packsaddle 1" and the original "packsaddle" lift was renamed "Packsaddle 2". Not sure when it was renamed A-51, sometime in the 90s IIRC. Rumor had it the name "Go Devil" freaked people out and they would not ride the lift.
Skiing since 1977, snowboarding since 1989
