No, there has never been a lift in this alignment.

Never has been a lift there. I think it was cut in anticipation of the lift that is just now being installed.

IIRC the line was cut in 1995 or 96. Just took a bit longer than they thought ot get the lift installed. There was another lift line cut for the new catskinner as well, whos knows when or if that will get put in.

Who knows. I'm thinking of starting a pool as to how many jibber camp attendees get pasted by shanked golf balls....

Still speculative as to when but Vail Daily is reporting that Vail Resorts has filed with USFS for permission to upgrade 3 lifts. The Mountaintop express #4 at Vail and Centennial express #6 at Beaver Creek would become sixpacks. Gopher Hill #12 at Vail would become a fixed triple (used).http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20130228/NEWS/130229842/1078&ParentProfile=1062

I recall a similar incident one summer while in the work chair on the light side of Tower 2....

That's the one. The top would have been above the alpine shop, but the P2P install ended that as a possibility. The new master plan shows the lift top terminal in the same location as the current one.

Never was built. Guess they left a line there as a "Just in case".

And it's about time. The waits at the Mountaintop Express are incredibly long, which probably couldn't have been helped with the Gondola One construction. Due to lines, I try to minimize time in that part of the mountain for a good reason. The Wildwood Express lines aren't bad, so it should stay an HSQ.

And it says a used triple would be used to replace Gopher Hill. I'm guessing the replacement would be Sun Up or a lift from another resort. Which makes me wonder where the current Mountaintop Express will go.

Until we are certain, I would make a guess that it would be: the Mountaintop Express lift would get upgraded to a high speed six pack, then the original quad would be installed in the Back Bowls on the Sun Up lift line (it looks reasonable as #4 is 4,300 feet long and Sun Up is 3,830 feet long - maybe the bottom terminal would be moved downhill to allow people to get into the lift from Sleepytime Catwalk without making a gooseneck turn), while Sun Up would go to Gopher Hill.

And at Beaver Creek, upgrading the Centennial Express certainly looks justified - I mean, it services quite a lot of terrain by itself. I know some proposals suggest a gondola for the Strawberry Park Express (an idea I say no to because that lift has actual trails off of it).

Beav's 6 is definitely old enough for retirement. 1986, used heavily winter and summer, all that jazz. I'm sure it's getting more and more expensive to maintain. Vail's 4 I don't know much about, but I recall it's the same vintage. Although they should have a bunch of parts off old #16 lying about somewhere that would still work on 4 and 11.

I think the "upgrading the Mountaintop Express lift" suggestion was actually relating to the crowd. It needs more uphill capacity. Admittedly so does the Northwoods Express after 1:00 PM.

Official announcement today that Vail will be replacing Chair 4 with a 3600 p/h capacity 6-passenger chairlift as well as Chair 12 being replaced with the triple from Rose Bowl at Beaver Creek. No official word on the manufacturer of the new #4 yet, although my guess would be that they continue to go with L-P.

Sounds like Doppelmayr is at least a possibility.

I hope that L-P gets to build the new lift, since it's in their home state, but either way it is a much-needed upgrade.

Vail Resorts to Invest Nearly $10 Million in Enhancing the Experience at Afton Alps and Offers Minnesota Skiers and Riders Access to Nine Ski Resorts on the Popular Epic Season Pass for the 2013-2014 Winter Season

With Vail Resorts' recent acquisition of Afton Alps, Minnesota skiers and snowboarders can already look forward to next winter as the Company invests nearly $10 million in significant enhancements to the ski and ride experience and offers the greatest resort access and value in the snow sports industry on one season pass, the Epic Pass.

As part of Vail Resorts' commitment to providing the experience of a lifetime to all of its guests, the Company plans to invest nearly $10 million in enhancements and upgrades to Afton Alps this summer to dramatically improve the guest experience next winter. Vail Resorts intends to significantly improve snowmaking to open the ski resort earlier, extend the season and provide a more consistent and high-quality snow surface; create state-of-the-art terrain parks with extensive new features and rope tows; energize and modernize the base area facilities; and add Vail Resorts' signature EpicMix and EpicMix Racing technology to personalize the guest experience.

Vail Resorts also is bringing its popular season pass products, the Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass, to Minnesota skiers and riders and offering access to Afton Alps as well as eight iconic resorts in the West--Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in Lake Tahoe. Even better, kids can ski and ride Afton Alps and these eight western resorts for $5 less than 2012-2013 Afton Alps Child Pass. Adults can ski or ride all nine resorts for $529, just $130 more than a current Afton Alps Pass. Purchasing next season's pass now through April 14 guarantees the lowest price and offers skiers and riders the option of making a $49 down payment now with the remainder due in the fall.

"We're thrilled that Afton Alps is now a part of our family of resorts. It's a very special place steeped in snow sports tradition and we intend to honor that legacy by bringing additional enhancements to the ski area and creating more value for Minnesota skiers and riders in their season pass choices. Next winter, they'll be able to ski as much as they want in their own backyard and at eight world-class resorts out West with the Epic Pass," said Kirsten Lynch, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts. "Vail Resorts' season passes offer guests the flexibility to choose which pass is right for them based on how much and where they plan to ski and ride. We encourage all of our guests to purchase their passes this spring to take advantage of the lowest guaranteed price for next winter."

The following guide can help Minnesota skiers and snowboarders choose the best season pass options for them, based on how much they plan to ski and ride locally and out West. All passes are available for purchase atwww.epicpass.com.
