Henry's Lake, ID Pics taken about two years ago. Anybody have any ideas about the name of the area, it's history and what kind of chairlift is this? Some of the parts look familiar to the boys here at JH but they can't name the lift's manufacturer (they aren't "old guys" either).
TIA,
Carl

I'm going to say Thiokol.

Do you know the name of the ski area because that lift looks really abandoned.

Those are most certainly Thiokol sheaves/assemblies and grips. The terminal and bullwheel doesn't look it though - it must be and early one.

Sheaves are Thiokol. The Terminal looks like a SLI and Later Riblet mix.

At first glance the grips look CTEC, but don't they normally say "CTEC" right on them?
Chairlift n. A transportation system found at most ski areas in which a series of chairs suspended from a cable rapidly conveys anywhere from one to eight skiers from the front of one line to the back of another.

Hmm, it seems this thing is a cornucopia of parts.......
Thank you all again for the info.

Carl

PS The color matches that of a Miner-Denver installed at Terry Peak, SD
back in 1967. That lift replaced the RINGLER! Anybody ever ridden a Ringler?

Looking on the Atlas, this ski area actually appears to be in Montana rather than in Idaho so maybe it would be best someone looked through the lift installation surveys for any ski areas that are no longer around today that installed either a double or triple chair. I first thought this might be the old Telecar lift at Bear Gulch, but that's in the southern part of Idaho.

The lower station looks slightly Miner-Denver to me.

I looked through the installation surveys from 1964-1985 and didnt see any matching lifts in Idaho or Montana. It must be a relocation or homemade.

Hi guys: Brad just tipped me off that you were having trouble with this one.

The ski area had 3 names. First was YELLOWSTONE SKI BOWL, then CHIEF JOSEPH SNOW BOWL, and it finished its life as just LIONHEAD. It operated from around 1947 to around 1974. (I can break the dates down by "name" if anyone cares.)

You guys will have a ball with the ski lift brand name. It was a CONSTAM single chair, installed at least by 1949. According to my records, Constam only installed 4 chairlifts in the U.S.

So, based on your comments, old Ernst either borrowed a lot of ideas from other manufacturers, or this lift had a lot of retrofits over the years. I'm thinking the latter.

Have fun with this discussion!

Interesting stuff... Don't know if its Lionhead though. Looking at the pictures and the direction of the sunlight (high enough to be around midday) it seems the lift's uphill slope is facing (predominantly) northwest, while looking at some topos I found on the web it looks like the ski slope at Lionhead faced east. A quick look at Google Earth would seem to confirm this. Perhaps this is another abandoned ski area in the West Yellowstone region? From what I've gathered, there were a few.

Oh, my, am I ever embarassed. My map above is WRONG! The lift above is at the intersection of US Hwy 20, which goes from Island Park, ID up to West Yellowstone, MT an on into the Nat'l Park. At Henry's Lake is an intersection where ID State Hwy 287 goes NW and up to Ennis, MT. The lift is very close to that intersection, which is indeed in the state of Idaho.

I'm really sorry for the confusion on my end and sure do appreciate the replies!

Okay, can we confirm that it is Hiway 87 and not 287?

Anyone know if this lift is on public or private land?

Theres a place for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.

My Targhee National Forest map shows the base of the lift to be on private land but the upper part of the lift is, I think, on TNF or, possibly, BLM land.

It is DEFINITELY at the intersection of US 20 and Idaho State 87. My Mapquest map above shows it as
ID 287 but I'd believe the TNF map.

Yep it is 87, I drove past it today. I also got some more pics but they were from the road with a telephoto because I couldn't find anyone to ask permission to be on the land. And also it is a double rather than a single or was converted after the original install. It also has had a tree fall on the line so the counterweight is much higher than in the first pics.
An overview of the area.
